Ms Riana

Country:

Republic of South Africa

Education:

Stellenbosch University and University of South Africa

Work experience:
I have been teaching Science and various other subjects for more than 15 years. This is my 7th academic year in Russia and at CIS Moscow. I taught for 1 year in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and 8 years in South Africa.

What makes you a good teacher?
I am a fourth generation teacher and grew up in the world of academia. I was raised with the mantra that knowledge is power and I believe my profession chose me. I am very passionate about the subjects I teach, especially Biology and Chemistry. It is important to me that my students not only enjoy learning but also develop into lifelong learners. I believe in an holistic approach and that the hidden curriculum is just as important. I am doing what I love and I hope to make a difference while I am doing it.

Achievements:
Initiating a netball program - including the training of coaches and umpires - at a rural school in Limpopo, South Africa. I am very proud of the players I coached who were selected for provincial and national teams. Giving birth to my son in Moscow. Raising my son with my husband in a foreign country without an immidiate support system. I am also immensely proud of many of the students I have taught over the years.

Lifestyle:
I love spending time with my family and friends. I enjoy watching sport, series and wildlife documentaries or reading. I am an animal lover, and enjoy working with horses. My most memorable experiences would be the Safaris I did on horseback, living in the Dwesa-Cwebe Nature Reserve, traveling to the Chobe district in Botswana as well as the Victoria Falls in Zambia.

Dreams & Ambitions:
My dream is to return to South Africa and open a non profit community centre to support the vulnerable families with academic and recreational support services.
