Holes written by Louis Sachar is a novel about a young boy who is falsely accused of a crime. He is sent away to Camp Green Lake, a juvenile corrections camp, where he is forced to dig holes every single day in the Texas heat. While he is told that digging the holes is punishment and he is doing it to “build character,” he begins to suspect that all of the boys at the camp are looking for something in particular. As the mystery unfolds, the book is able to address important issues facing people today in a fun way for the readers.
Holes is a very popular book in the USA for young adults to read in school. It has won many awards and is even 6th among all-time children's novels in a survey published by School Library Journal. It was adapted into a movie in 2003. It is a great novel for students from year 6 and up. It builds suspense in an unusual way and is able to keep the reader guessing all the way until the resolution.
